When Gratitude Looks Like Trust

This November, we’re slowing down to reflect on what it really means to cultivate gratitude. Scripture tells us to “give thanks in all circumstances,” but that kind of gratitude isn’t a one-time event–it’s a rhythm. A way of seeing God’s hand in the everyday.

Throughout this week, we’re sharing personal reflections from members of the ACO family–board members, pastors, and ministry partners who have seen God’s goodness in unexpected ways. From quiet moments of worship in Kenya to the curveballs of everyday life, their stories remind us that gratitude isn’t based on what we have, but on who God is.

Join us as we walk through these stories and rediscover the daily rhythm of giving thanks.

Devotional

We had just sent our kids off to church camp for a couple of weeks, and my wife and I were able to sneak away for a little vacation—something we rarely get to do with three kids! One day during the vacation, I was sitting in the pool reminiscing about the summer and how much fun we had been having as a family. I had this “aha” moment—a sense of peace and thankfulness for how things were going for our family fell over me. However, I think that God has a way of always keeping you on your toes. Just when you think you have life figured out, He throws you a curveball!

As I was deep in thought floating in the pool, my wife was just a few feet away with our fourth baby unknowingly growing inside her. Neither of us had any idea until a few weeks later! My girls are ages 10, 9, and 7, so the newborn phase has been in the rearview mirror for a while.

Immediately, the questions started circling: What will this mean for the future? How will this impact our family? How do we pay for this? After the initial shock of the news wore off, I started to have different feelings—joy, excitement, thankfulness. I don’t have all the answers, but what I do have is complete confidence that God is in control, and He always has been.

I’m reminded of Proverbs 19:21: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” I’m choosing to believe this truth and am grateful that I serve a God whose story for my life will prevail. May we all find comfort in that verse and be thankful, as His plans are greater and better than ours!

Closing Reflection:

Gratitude often begins where control ends. When life surprises us, may we rest in the truth that God’s plans always prevail.

This reflection is shared by Cody Vondermehden, a member of the ACO Board and long-time friend of the ministry. Cody reminds us that gratitude often grows in the most unexpected places–when our plans shift, but God’s purpose remains steady.
